Ber Leaves (Zizyphus jujuba)
Local Name: Beri
Zizyphus jujuba is a widely cultivated shrub, whose leaves are traditionally used as a fodder source for sheep and goats. In arid regions, it serves as a critical feed for these animals. During the dry season in Rajasthan, ground ber leaves are often mixed with other feeds. The entire shrub can be harvested, with the leaves dried and beaten off using sticks. The resulting dried product, known as pala (a general term for dried leaves used as livestock feed), yields about 1.0-1.6 kg of dry matter per tree.
Nutritive Value
A comparative study on the palatability of various tree leaves revealed that ber leaves are more palatable than pipal or pakar leaves. Ber leaves are rich in crude protein (18.6%), but their digestibility coefficient is relatively low at 36%.
